Abilene Dragstrip January 2008
A new sound system was installed at
the Abilene Drag Strip which was just
recently purchased and is under
renovation.
To improve audio coverage over the
parking areas and spectator seating
Community R series speakers were
chosen. A cluster of 3 R2 742Z full
range horns were installed at the
Northwest corner of the strip to
provide sound for the spectator
seating and the entry lanes.
R .5 94ZT horns were located on
light poles on the north and south
parking areas for spectator parking
and the tuning parking
3 400 watt Transformers were
provided for the R2 speakers to step
them up to 100 volts.
Approximately 700 ft of ditching took
place and all wiring on the north side
of the drag strip was replaced and
buried finally.
Custom brackets for speakers were
provided by G & D Fabricators of
Abilene, Texas
QSC Rmx 2402 power amps were
supplied and run in bridge mode to
provide the voltage to drive the
speaker systems.
The system is managed by a Peavey
VSX 26 for bandpass, time alignment,
and dynamics, a Bogen ambient volume
processor was provided to adjust gain
when cars are running. Bogen ceiling
speakers and volume controls were
provided in the VIP lounge and viewing
areas.
All inputs to the system pass through
a AAPeavey SMR821 mixer and power
is managed by a Surge X protector,
with a grounding system to keep
speaker lines grounded when the
system is not in use.
Microphones were provided by Shure
and Audio Technica.
All equipment was mounted in a Lowell
L253 series rack with the needed
rack accessories.
An Acer computer with a Tascam
122L USB mic pre with a Tascam side
address mic were provided so spots
can produced in the track office.
Spots are played through a 360
Systems digital ad player.
The Abilene Drag Strip is a 1/8 mile
race track located on Interstate 20
on the Northwest side of Abilene,
Texas. Additional improvements being
made to the drag strip is leveling of
the race track, replacing the
under-layment and repaving of the
shutdown lanes, lighting of the return
roads, improvements to the concession
areas to mention a few.
